deep grief and sorrow over the passing away of Enahoro whom he described as a “dedicated and sincere nationalist.”
A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Doifie Ola, quoted Sylva as saying: “I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our great nationalist and elder statesman who played a very important role in the making of present-day Nigeria. Enahoro had an abiding commitment to the progress of Nigeria. He spent the most part of his vibrant political life fighting for the entrenchment of freedom, democracy, and egalitarianism in Nigeria. Even in old age, he had Nigeria always on his mind. He spent the later part of his life offering, from his rich hindsight and foresight, rare insights on how to pull Nigeria back from a disappointing precipice he consistently warned that the country was headed for.”
Enahoro died on Wednesday in Benin at the age of 87. Governor Sylva recalled the role Enahoro played in the independence of the country from British colonialism and in the later struggles to free it from the stranglehold of military dictatorship, saying, “Nigeria has lost a great son, a standing patriot and democracy activist.”
Sylva praised Enahoro as a man who remained sincere to his convictions till death.
“As one of those who drank from his rich fountain of knowledge, I will miss him personally. For us in the Niger Delta, Enahoro will be deeply missed, as he was one of our finest teachers and examples of dignity and doggedness in struggle for justice. He shaped our history and gave us credible direction for the future. Our family chain is, surely, broken. But as God calls us one by one, we can only pray Him to give us the grace to make the chain link again,” the governor said
