ASUU strike: Group threatens legal action

The Commercial Oil and Gas Aviation and Tax Lawyers Association (COGATLA), has threatened legal action against South-east governors if they failed to resolve the long drawn strike in state-owned universities in the region within 14 days.
This was contained in a press release, signed by the group’s President, Mr. Chijioke Ndubuisi, which was made available to Daily Sun.

The group condemned the prolonged strike and urged the state governors to speed-up negotiation with the zonal Academic Staff Unionof Universities (ASUU) to end the action.
The lawyers also warned that unless the issue was resolved if within 14 days, the governors refused to make necessary move to end the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of the Universities (ASUU), which had caused serious set back in the education system in the region, they would be charged to court for reneging on the 2009 ASUU/Federal Government agreement which was jointly signed by the negotiating teams.


Ndubuisi, a lawyer, also appealed to the South-east governors to fulfil the promises made to uplift educational sector in their various states during their campaign into office as governors. He decried the falling standard of education and expressed worries on the deteriorating nature of the university. system as a result of the strike. The group threatened to drag the governors to court .

According to COGATLA, in a letter signed by the association’s President, Mr. Chijioke Ndubisi, a copy of which was sent to Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi and also copied other governors, the group appealed to Governor Obi to urgently engage ASUU in more meaningful dialogue with the sole aim of ending the almost six months old strike.

COGATLA stated that the fortunes and standard of education in South-east must be stopped from further nose-dived from the overall development of education, adding that the zone must be part and parcel of vision 2020 of the Federal Government.
“No matter the constraint on the agreement, the governor must obey it to uplift education and fulfill their promises made to the electorate.”
